What Is the Rabies Titer Test?

The rabies titer test (Rabies Titer Test) is a laboratory test performed to determine whether a cat that has received a rabies vaccination has developed a sufficient level of antibodies against rabies in its blood.

When leaving the country, depending on the rules of the destination country, having the rabies vaccination alone may not be enough. After a set period following the rabies vaccination, a blood sample is taken from the cat and the rabies antibody level in the blood is measured at an authorized laboratory.

For travel from Türkiye to European Union countries, the process generally proceeds as follows: the blood sample is taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination, and a three-month waiting period counted from the date of blood sampling must be completed. For this reason, the preparation process takes about four months, and the cat cannot travel to the relevant countries before this mandatory waiting period is completed.

To put it simply, you can think of the rabies titer process as your cat's “visa application process” for traveling abroad. All stages, from the microchip to the rabies vaccination, from blood sampling to the laboratory result and the mandatory waiting period, must be completed at the right time and in the right order.

Process

The Titer Process at Hepsi Patime Cat's Hotel

The cats to be taken abroad are sometimes the family's own cat that they have lived with for a long time, and sometimes a cat found on the street in Türkiye and adopted, who will live abroad with its new family.

At Hepsi Patime Cat's Hotel, in both cases we manage the preparation process required for the cat to leave the country from start to finish.

For newly adopted cats, we carry out all stages of the process together with our contracted veterinarian, starting with the necessary health checks and meeting the requirements for leaving the country, then planning the veterinary procedures, performing the rabies titer test, obtaining the necessary results, and completing the official paperwork and formalities.

For cats with owners, we assess the existing health and vaccination records, identify any missing procedures, and plan the process in line with the destination country's requirements.

During this preparation and mandatory waiting period, which can last about four months, we house the cat at Hepsi Patime Cat's Hotel and continue its daily care, feeding and health monitoring.

When all veterinary and official procedures are completed, we hand our cat over to its family with all the preparations for travel abroad completed.

The Path Until Departure

  1. 01Start

    Microchip and Rabies Vaccination

The microchip is checked and the rabies vaccination is given. These two records are the basis of all later procedures.

  2. 02+30 days

    Blood Sampling

A blood sample is taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. A sample taken before this period has passed is not considered valid.

  3. 03Antibody measurement

    Laboratory Result

The rabies antibody level in the blood is measured at an authorised laboratory and the result is documented.

  4. 04+3 months

    Mandatory Waiting

The three-month waiting period from the date of blood sampling is completed. Your cat can spend this period with us.

The stages summarise the general process for travel from Türkiye to European Union countries; the rules of the destination country may differ.
